Hello! I am from central Indiana, just outside of Kokomo. I stumbled upon this site and enjoy reading other posts and learning new things about chickens. We moved last fall to a secluded place with ponds and woods and acquired a nice flock of 20 laying hens from a neighbor who got tired of them (I can't imagine that!). There were RI reds, buff orpingtons, barred rocks, black austalorps, and a couple white cochins. Coyotes soon discovered our free range flock and killed a couple, then recently raccoons found them and started killing them too. We have killed 3 of the coons (one last night) and we are now down to 9 hens and 1 rooster. We have not been able to kill any of the coyotes, they come at any time of day or night and are pretty smart. We need to fortify their yard with better fencing. I am interested in learning more about that. I am letting some broody hens set on their eggs to replenish our flock...any tricks or hints on how best to do that would be appreciated.
