We are new members to BYC but have had livestock for many years. For years we have maintained a general laying flock made up of Australorps, Cochins, Orpingtons, Speckled Sussex, Rhode Island Reds, Wyandottes, etc...the basic "must haves" of the backyard laying flock. This year, we expanded into some rare breeds and will be raising them for their special characteristics, which will fit into our farm's overall sustainability mission and marketing plan. New breeds include Blue and Black Copper Marans, Cream Legbars, Bielevelders, Rhodebars, Swedish Flower Hens, and White Bresse. A few more breeds will be added soon.
We have also expanded our flock to include turkeys, geese, ducks, and guineas. Most of our turkeys are Bourbon Reds. We are trying to add more Royal Palms and have some Bronze. A couple of weeks ago, some "Florida Heritage" turkey poults were successfully hatched in our incubator. I'm not sure what those are, since the breed does not exist, but this will still be a fun project. We recently bought a mated pair of peafowl and are awaiting our first hatch of peachicks.
Our farm is Animal Welfare Approved and we are NPIP certified. In addition to poultry, we breed Icelandic sheep, Belted Galloway cattle, Tennessee Walking Horses, and have an apiary of chemical-free beehives. We are Master Beekeepers, Master Sheep Producers, and Certified Welsh Honey Judges.
As you have probably surmised, we are "all in" with agriculture. I am eager to learn more from each of you and hear your stories. Glad to meet you!
