Hello BYC!

My husband and I have talked about getting chickens for a while and last Saturday I went and picked up 6 new little wee babes from our local Big R. I'm not entirely sure what type they are or how old they are- but I sure am smitten! We live in Conifer, Colorado- which is about an hour into the Rocky Mountains, approximately 9,000ft elevation. We have 10 acres and are starting the construction of our coop and run. I would love to have them free range, but we do have predators in the area and I don't want to run the risk.

If anyone who reads this has experience with raising mountain chickens, please pass on your words of wisdom! I'm most concerned about insulating the coop and how close to Fort Knox do I need to achieve for the run.

Here's a shot of 4 of the new chickies. Not pictured: another of the Sussex-y looking type and what I'm almost positive is a RIR.

Thank you!

Hi, welcome to BYC! Feel free to ask any questions.
Your chicks are so cute! The yellow one looks to be a buff orpington. I have two of that breed, and they're great layers. They also make great broodies. I also have 5 speckled Sussex. They are the most inquisitive things! Watch out with the SS roosters, tho. Mine was so sweet up until last week. RIRs are also great layers, and hardy.
I'm at a low elevation in NC, and our main predators are foxes and our dog. I don't know what kinds of predators you have, but @Mountainpeeps may know. She lives up north.

Good luck!

Silkiecuddles,

A buff orpington, really!? I sure hope so... Her wing feathers and tail feathers are coming in really, really white... Still possible for a buff orpington? One of my friends was thinking white leghorn.

Thanks, Kelsie2290! I will certainly check that out!

Oh, then maybe not. It looks really yellow in the picture. White leghorns I've read are really really great layers

The photo isn't the best quality because of the heat lamp. That red color distorts everything!

Any clue what the little black ones might be?

Not really, I'm not very good with guessing breeds. There are many different breeds that are black. There's black giant, black Austrolorp, etc.
