Hello All!
We bought our first chickens about a month ago from a lady who's son was leaving home for college (he did 4H chickens) and she needed to downsize her flock.
With so much work to do on the farm, we decided to get some that were laying already, and some pullets that should be laying soon, rather than add on the work of baby chicks. We'll be expanding our coop this fall, and we're planning on chicks for next year for sure!
We have 4 Buff Orpington layers, and 4 Rhode Island Red pullets. We have an issue with the Buffs bullying the Rhodies and being cranky in general. They chase the Rhodies off the roosting poles and make them sleep in the nesting boxes-ugh! I have an idea to add another pole on the opposite side of the coop from the Buffs roosting area, I hope that works!
My family (husband, myself and 2 yr old daughter) are blessed to live on a soon-to-be fantastic 10 acres of chickens, goats, alpacas, gardening and organic sustainability! We were hired last year to be live-in caretakers for a downtown family who wanted a "weekend country estate". The property suffered 10 years of neglect before we arrived, so this year (and probably next!) will be dedicated to repair and restoration in addition to trying to create the environment our landords desire. While I was raised on 380 acres in Eastern WA, the farm was already 75 years old and running smoothly by the time I came along. Needless to say, starting fresh is a bit overwhelming! I was so grateful to find BYC, I need all the help I can get!
