Hi, so after hearing that everyone in our neighborhood has chicks or chickens I decided to cave into the pressure and pickup a few chicks. We went down to the local feed store and picked up 4 Buff Cochins (Now if you look at my picture we have more than 4 now). However one of the reason for the chicks is so that later we can have eggs and my understanding is Cochins are not the best egg layers, so we found an advertisement from someone in Colorado selling Buff Orpingtons and went and picked up 2 more chicks to add for better egg production. Keep in mind this is before I looked up the information about how many chickens you can have in Highlands Ranch which is a max of 4 (I will have to decide what to do later). In reality if I had read on chickens instead of purchasing based on family pressure I would have gotten 4 Wyandottes or maybe 2 Wyadottes with 2 Orpingtons. I might make that change anyways later on.
Now it is time to design a coop for the HOA to be happy with our birds and possibly hide 2 birds from view. I think my preference would be to build the coop into the garage to keep them cozy and to keep us out of the cold weather when we are having to clean the coop. Otherwise a well placed 4x8 coop outside would probably be fine.
