Greetings from Houston!

Hello and :welcome There’s so many helpful, knowledgeable folks here and I’m sure you’ll find this site a very useful resource. I hope you enjoy it as much as we all do.

I have to say it’s lovely to raise your own chicks. That wait for eggs will be agonising though! :gig

Howdy and thanks for the add! I live right near downtown Houston (we can see the skyscrapers a mile away from our back yard) and are one of the rarer types who actually HAVE a fenced in single-family home with a yard, in the area. My husband and I have been kicking around the idea of getting chickens for a few years, but I think what's tipped the scale towards "let's do this" was our 9yo being offered a kitten by a classmate at school. We said no to the cat (got two dogs, and DH is allergic to cats) but thought chickens might be a good way for her to be involved in raising and caring for animals (the fish and gerbils she's kept are good and all, but not the most interactive of pets). Plus, eggs...

I know several feed stores which generally has lots of chicks, pullets and hens, so we have plenty of local places to pick up stock. I'm excited to learn around here, and figure out what our approach will be. DH wants to go straight to egg-laying age hens, my daughter would like chicks, and I'm good with a mix, to start.

We have a nicely shaded corner of our lot on the southeast side that could probably afford up to 200sqft or so of a footprint (run+coop), but we'll probably start out with a small flock until we learn what we are doing.

Thanks

And eggs, and eggs and eggs!

Oh for sure! Just gotta get DH on board with having little peeps inside for awhile.
Build your coop first and brood them outside in it.
MUCH easier and keeps your house much cleaner.
;)

If you want to take a drive out to San Leon, Seabreeze Hens has a huge variety of breeds and ages. Our kids have loved going just to look at all the different ones and see the baby chicks. Seabreezehens.com
She orders some of her birds too and you can order them yourself for a much cheaper price.
