Hello, fellow chicken owners! I am not new to raising chickens, but I continually am learning new things! In 2015, I had 10 hens in my old location, and I have recently moved to Idaho, and have bought 15 new ones.
I have found that I love a colorful basket! I was a little disappointed that 3 of my chicks turned out to be males, but now, I can embark on chicken husbandry, of which I have tons of questions, and am confident that they will be answered here.
These are the breeds that I have: 3 Easter Egger pullets, named Tres, Herma, and Nas (tres hermanas!); a male and female Old English bantam, named Union Jack, and Brit; a Cuckoo Maran pullet, named Cuckoo; a Wellsummer cockerel, named Welly; a male and female Blue Copper Maran, named Copper and Blue (I know, some of my names are not very creative, but they help me remember the type of breed they are!); 2 Cream Legbar pullets, named Tuft and Topknot (they like to peck my fingers as often as they can); a Cochin pullet, named Cochine; a Golden-laced Wyandotte pullet, named Goldy; a Silver-laced Wyandotte pullet, named Lacey; and a Russian Orloff pullet, named Ruskey.
I really like having animals around that give back something, and I love fresh eggs and the fertilizer they provide when composted, for my garden. Gardening is a favorite of mine, and I'm building a homestead. I'm creating an orchard, and I hope to have a milking cow, or a couple of milk goats.
Some things I'm hoping to find here are people and instructions (materials list, blueprints or plans), etc. for building a 12' x 12' predator-proof run to attach to my coop, how to successfully hatch chicks, and how to keep my chickens alive throughout the harsh winters here.
I discovered BYC back in 2015, but have pretty much been a lurker and a reader. I hope that I can contribute something worthwhile here one day!
