Hatching
I'm fairly new to raising chickens. My family and my sister's family recently moved in together on an acreage in the cou try and we decided we wanted some layers. We have 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Plymouth Barred Rock. One of our RIR laid the first egg and we are pretty excited. Planning on building a bigger coop in the barn before winter hits and possibly getting some araucanas next spring. Just warning that may ask a few super newbie questions lol... Take care!
) Just be aware that if you purchase Araucanas from a hatchery or feed store they will be Easter Eggers rather than true Araucanas which are rare, expensive, lay only blue eggs, and can only be purchased from breeders. Easter Eggers are hybrids that are produced by crossing blue egg layers with brown egg layers to produce offspring that lay eggs in colors other than just blue (olive, green, beige, and sometimes pale pink). Hatcheries and feed stores frequently and incorrectly market their Easter Eggers as Araucanas or Ameraucanas (both of which are true breeds). There is a good article at
