I'm fairly new to raising chickens. My family and my sister's family recently moved in together on an acreage in the cou try and we decided we wanted some layers. We have 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Plymouth Barred Rock. One of our RIR laid the first egg and we are pretty excited. Planning on building a bigger coop in the barn before winter hits and possibly getting some araucanas next spring. Just warning that may ask a few super newbie questions lol... Take care!

Glad you joined the Backyard chickens flock. Have you visited the Learning Center? It's the best place to start a chicken education.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Congratulations! It's always so "egg"citing getting that first egg.) Just be aware that if you purchase Araucanas from a hatchery or feed store they will be Easter Eggers rather than true Araucanas which are rare, expensive, lay only blue eggs, and can only be purchased from breeders. Easter Eggers are hybrids that are produced by crossing blue egg layers with brown egg layers to produce offspring that lay eggs in colors other than just blue (olive, green, beige, and sometimes pale pink). Hatcheries and feed stores frequently and incorrectly market their Easter Eggers as Araucanas or Ameraucanas (both of which are true breeds). There is a good article at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/09/ameraucana-easter-egger-or-araucana.html explaining the difference between true Araucanas, true Ameraucanas, and Easter Eggers. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting many more eggs.

Good morning, welcome to BYC!

Congrats on getting that first egg, you have some good layers so it is the first of many I'm sure.

If you would like to 'meet' other Iowans, you can find some of them on your state thread:

Good luck with your flock, nice to have you here!
