(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

My family started raising chickens back in May of this year. I was at TSC with one of my daughters and they had the bins of chicks out for sale. I have 7 kids who all LOVE to eat eggs (well, one of them doesn't like them but we just overlook that) and I figured that if we could raise our own it would save us money. Plus, from all the research I have done, fresh eggs are healthier than store bought. And the whole family all LOVE them. We treat them as pets rather than a food supply. I am not sure how they would react if I decided to use some of them as a meat source.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We currently have 9 chickens.

(3) What breeds do you have?

We have 3 buff orpington (one rooster and 2 hens) and 6 Red Star (all hens)

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

I was looking for information about how to raise chickens and I came across a search result for Derperella here at BYC. I have been hooked ever since.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

With 7 kids, I do not really have much time for anything else but I enjoy reading, woodworking and an occasional video game, when the computer is free.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have been married for 12 years. My wife and I have 7 kids, 3 boys and 4 girls. We also have one Pomeranian, one cat (not sure of breed, I just know he is annoying), 2 guinea pigs and 4 gourami fish. We are looking to purchase a breeding set of tilapia to start our own fish farm. And the girls have been on me FOREVER to get a pony. I have held out this long but I don't think I will make it past my next tax return.

I have some pictures of our flock and as soon as I figure out how to resize them, I will upload them.

Hi, just up the road from you. New Salisbury Indiana. We started with 8 six from tsc and 2 EEs from orsheclien. Then we took in my daughters chicks so we have 16. 13 pullets, 2 bantam Roos and maybe 1 more roo. Not sure of breed of that one.
Oh my daughter has some broke ponies forsale not to high priced. My 5 year old grand daughter rides them so they are very very tame ponies they don't kick or try to throw kids.
