Hi everyone!
I am so excited to be a new member of the BYC community!
My husband and I bought our first home in 2018 and are quickly turning it into a homestead. We have raised Plymouth Barred Rocks in the past so we started with those last year. We have one rooster named Christopher Lloyd (due to his scraggly feathers as a chick) and 14 beautiful hens that are great layers! They currently reside in a large Chickshaw that we built from scratch (thank you for the inspiration, Justin Rhodes!) and we will be building a large hoop house once the weather cooperates. Four of them, along with Christopher, are from our first flock from April 2019 (we lost the rest to a fox) and the other ten are from the second flock hatched in July 2019. We buy all of our day-old chicks from Mt. Healthy Hatchery in Ohio and have really enjoyed working with them!
This year, we had our first successful Plymouth Barred Rock breeding via incubation which was an amazing experience! We also bought Americauna chicks that are now 3 weeks old. We are also trying meat hens for the first time, but are having some difficulty with this. We are raising 25 each Cornish Cross and Freedom Rangers, but have lost 8 so far which is very disappointing. We are building Suscovich chickens tractors for them.
I am joining BYC as this is a community where I have had most of my questions answered! Any time I am looking up questions online, I am drawn to these threads and am so impressed with the wealth of knowledge and experience by the members. I am so happy to be a member now and thank you for welcoming me to your community!
Sincerely,
Jessica
