New Chicken owner. Why? Because we like eggs and animals! Background....I raised budgie birds, progressed to Senegal parrots breeding and hand rearing. I've also trained and shown Morgan horses and Rottweilers (schutzhund). I have owned retired racing greyhounds and currently have 2 rescue German Shepherds. Various cats throughout my life and have a 19 year old cat that I rescued as a kitten.

I have 5 chickens currently. 2 Australorps and 2 Wyandottes - all about 6 weeks and got them when they were a few days old. I added a buff orpington 2 weeks ago and she is about 8 weeks old. I purchased the 4 chicks with the expectation that I'd get a roo or two that I cannot keep. I live in a residential neighborhood and am wanting to avoid chicken math and have 3-4 hens. I am looking to figure out soonish which are roos as I'd like to add a Ameraucana to the mix for the blue eggs. :)

I have been LOVING the chick rearing - and seeing the personalities...I'm looking forward to completing the chicken run and getting them outside as soon as the weather warms abit more here in Northern California. My 10 year old stepdaughter loves interacting with them to work on their "pet" status.

I work in finance and administration in a medical center locally and when not listening to the cute peeps in the background, my husband and I like to hike, sail, bike, kayak....anything outdoors.

I did alot of reading and research prior to getting the chicks and have used this site for information. I have joined so I can post and participate in the forums - first learning and hopefully later, helping newbies.

THANKS for the join!

Hi, Teauxja, glad to meet you! I'm a new member from Northern California, too (coastal Humboldt). Are you as far north as we are and having all this crazy weather this winter? My first chicks are going into their 2nd and 3rd weeks, so much fun! Too cold for them to even visit outside yet, but I'm looking forward to giving them their first "grass visit" when they're a bit older and the days warm up more. Hope you'll keep us informed of your chicks' progress!
