Hello yall. Been lurking for about five year and registered for about three now. Have been content with just reading and not making any replies as I gained experience and knowledge but I have become full fledged addicted to it now. In six years I have lost four good flocks to predators and get fed up with it and state that I will never own another chicken, then spring comes around and I get the bug agaian. I have made my own incubators and have had numerous successful hatches with them. Just bought the rite farm 3600 incubator and will set my first batch in it this coming weekend. Going to hatch some Buff Polish Frizzles this time around and hoping to throw some Wheaten Ameraucanas in there with them if I can find them. Bees,gardening and fishing are my other constant passions, my A.D.D. keeps me busy with all kinds of hobbies but I always fall back to my core group.

First - do you know what type of predator(s) keep wiping out your flocks? You really need to figure out what and how they are getting to your birds. You may want to check out the predator section for ways to keep you flock safe. Otherwise you are just feeding predators free meals, Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Mainly neighbors dogs or my dog when he was a pup. We had one flock taken out by a pair of owls. They got my last two araucanas the night I put out my game camera. Owls came around to eat our rabbits but stayed for the chickens. The dogs are all gone except for mine and now he herds up the chicks and protects them. Have had my current flock for just over a year with no problems at all.
