Hello! I am Frank. Greetings from the Catskill Mountains in New York!!!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I received my first flock & coop as a gift from a close friend mine, back in 2012. He was a Native American who taught me allot about both wilderness survival & homesteading. He had built the coop by hand & the birds were six Rhode Island Reds from Amish stock. Since then, I was hooked!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I currently have no birds. However, I will be picking up my new flock on April 1st, 2023!
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have raised the following breeds over the years…
Hens: Crested Cream Legbars, Cuckoo Marans, Gold Stars, Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Silkies, & a few hand-me-down mutts!
Roos: Buff Orphington, Icelandic, Silky, & Rhode Island Red.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
This is a tough one, there are so many! First, I love being outdoors & I love animals. This hobby has also proven to be a fun way to bond with my children. It is full of hands on learning experiences for all involved. I also find it very amusing when I get to sit back & watch my bird’s social and foraging behaviors. And, I can’t forget all of those fresh, delicious marigold yokes!!!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I love photography, hiking, gardening, & cooking. I also raise several species of tarantulas & scorpions in bioactive enclosures!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My career involves environmental education & enforcement. I am a proud father of two & we have a dog, two cats, & many arachnids!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
A few years back I previously had an account, under another name, on BYC. I really enjoyed socializing & sharing pics. However, I have to say the best reason for re-joining BYC is all of the helpful information you can find here, which is posted by very experienced people.
Warm wishes to my fellow BYC community for a healthy & happy 2023! I look forward to getting to know y’all!!!
