Hello BYC peeps...

I am an overjoyed rookie chic mother of six adorable baby chickens. We live in the rural suburbs of Oregon, and are so looking forward to raising ourselves some beautiful hens. I grew up on a 14 acre hazelnut farm, but have zero experience with chickens. I think my family will be suprised how much we end up loving this little adventure. What a great experience for our 2 kids (and my husband and I as well) it will be!

So of the six we have 2 silver laced wyandottes, a rhode island red, a buff orpington, a buff brahma, and an amauracana. I have read three books on chicken keeping. I girl has to be prepared right? I can't believe how fast they are growing! They seem to double in size every hour. Right now they are all taking a much needed rest. All six chics sprawled out lazily in the brooder, one asleep while perched on the feeder! Funny little critters. They have already entertained us...chasing eachother around trying to steal a piece of newspaper from eachother today. We have had them for two weeks now and they are really getting to know us now. They are less startled by my hand and more curious about what I might be offering. A little scratch perhaps?

So fun...so looking forward to getting to know more about these creatures and the people who love them.

Thanks for having me!

should I not be offering scratch as a treat? the feed store gave us some "chic scratch" and also "chic grit" I have been giving the scratch as a from my hand treat/bribe to get them used to me...suppose I could just use the starter feed if the scratch is a no no.
