Hello to everybody! I'm excited to be a part of the community, I look forward to learning as much as I plan on sharing.
First time with chickens, or first time in a while. I grew up with chickens, but never was able to take part in rasing them. I also live with a roomate who has raised chickens in the past, but hasn't done so in a few years. We currently have a small flock of Coturnix quail as well.
As of now our chicken flock consists of a gold and silver Wyandotte, a Golden Lakenvelder, a Dominique, an Iowa Blue, and a cuckoo Marans. All hatchery birds that were intended as "easter suprises to the kids" the chicks are all 3-4 weeks old and are as happy and healthy as can be. I hope to be adding BCM and Isbar chicks very very soon, both from decent lines. Also looking, quite unsuccessfuly, for Barnevelder and Welsummer chicks/birds from decent stock. I didn't expect to dive head first into the world of poultry, but it's is exciting, fun, and addicting! So much to learn!
Some other interests of mine are gardening, beekeeping, cooking, hunting and fishing. All therapeutic in the right doses.
I am a father to 3 daughters ages 2, 8 & 9. All share in my passions, in one way or another. My oldest has really taken a liking to the chicks and quail, and she also enjoys hunting with daddy. My middle girl likes to help cook and likes digging in the dirt. The youngest, she is a jack of all trades and is so curious with life she enjoy it all. I find it extremely rewarding to see their interest peak when discovering new things, and love when they want to learn more. Part of the reason we are getting into chickens is for the kids. The responsibility, the work, the time involved, the bonds, the losses and the rewards(eggs) all valuable life lessons.
As our flock grows, I'm sure my aspirations with chickens will too. I would very much like to establish a pure flock and hope to eventually get into breeding and/or egg production. For now, we are enjoying the fun and learning all we can.
