(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
When I was a kid I was helping my grandfather on his farm. He had a couple of cows and 6-10 hens for egg laying. In recent years he got too old to take care of the farm and me and my family jumped in and kinda took over his small farm. We bought our first 13 birds 2 years ago and the number is constantly growing since then.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently we have 57 birds - 29 active layers, 3 mother hens with 24 chicks (1-12 weeks of age) and 1 rooster (he will be replaced with male chicks when they grow up). We raise them for eggs which we sell to people from our village and when they get older some meat for our home consumption.
(3) What breeds do you have? I also added a description of our chicken spaces
With chicks included we have 18 brown layers, 15 of štajerska hen (traditional slovene breed, don't know of its English name), 6 australorp, 5 mixed between brown layers and štajerska hen, 4 araucana, 3 leghorn, 2 orpington, 2 silkies, 1 olive egger and 1 swedish flower hen.
Our space is divided in four main areas:
-Barn/cowshed (around 650 sq ft). This space is also shared with two cows living with them during the winter time.
-Dry rummage area (around 60 sq ft) where we have a bunch of wood shavings, hay dust (basically dust, some seeds and small particles of hay). We throw some whole grains on the floor to keep the chickens engaged.
-Permanent pasture area (around 3000 sq ft) where we have a few piles of compost where we put our kitchen leftovers, weed from the garden and other things. There is no grass in this area, they were too aggressive for it to grow. There are fruit trees growing in the area, so they have shade and there are two piles of branches where they can hide away.
-Grass pasture which we constantly nove (I don't know the exact surface area but we use 330 feet of chicken net for this)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of
raising backyard chickens?
We try to provide good conditions for our chickens and keep them happy. It's always a pleasure to watch them scratching around and how they behave. And with a flock that big you can just sit and enjoy the view. Also eggs and meat are not bad.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Besides this and work I don't have any real hobbies.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am the oldest kid in the family (23) and I have a brother (14) and 3 sisters. I take care of the animals together with my brother and dad.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC when I was reasearhing things about chickens and I joined it when I had some questions of my own. I don't have much experience but I will also try to give something back and help the others if possible.
Sorry for possible mistakes English is not my first language and thank you for all the advices that I already got and will get from you!
