New member here, been lurking for several months and have finally pulled the trigger. New babies are going to be here at the end of March, leaving plenty of time to start building the coop/run.

Since I'm in South Texas, about 20 mile from Corpus Christi, I tried to get heat tolerant, non-broody and friendly breeds. Ordered 2 Green Queen Easter Eggers, 2 Easter Eggers, 2 Golden Buff or Red Star and 2 Welsummer chickens from My Pet Chickens. Other hatcheries wanted way more for shipping and the chicks wouldn't arrive till late May.

Originally wanted 6, but "minimum" was 8 for shipping to my area. Lesson #1 on "Chicken math."

I guess it's ok that they will send 8, incase a cockerel or 2 get's thrown in there on you.
