Hello

Well I'm a first timer. My wife and I (and a neighbor) have a small flock (6 hens) of golden comets which are just starting to lay. We got the birds as pullets. Great birds from what I can see, although Penny likes to peck you in the back of the leg when your not looking. They are free range, though contained, and we really want to feed either full organic or at least GMO free layer pellets and scratch feed. Unfortunately there does no appear to be many options here with regard to GMO free feeds that are not organic. i see that a company Green Mountain in Vermont has non GMO feed but can't fisnd any dealers near me that can get it. Two questions really. How does the non GMO feed compare in price to the organic feed? Are there any others from Connecticut that have access to non GMO and or organic feeds that might buy in bulk thuis reducing costs. Oh yeah, how much feed will 6 chickens eat per month approximately ? 30 eggs so far ! hooray

Hi Bob, welcome to BYC!

And congrats on your new flock! Golden comets are one of several names for the Red Sex Links and they are heavy layers (we have 3 in our mixed flock). They also are pretty big eaters. We have a total of 13 birds and go through about 50 pounds of feed every 2 weeks.

Funny you mention how one of your birds likes to peck when you aren't looking! All 3 of our RSL's will do that but none of the other breeds we have do. I started just picking them up whenever they pecked me and now I have a very cuddly RSL that only does it when she wants to be picked up. Ornery, curious birds...I really enjoy them and hope you do too.

Here's your state thread if you'd like to chat to other members in CT, they may have info for you on the feed questions:

Good luck with your birds, hope you enjoy it here!
