Hi! I am new to backyard chickens. I've posted a few questions generally, but I finally took the plunge this week and went from a coop in construction to 14 chicks of varying ages.
I have three children who are delighted about the birds. And so are their friends. We've had lots of kids come around to meet the chicks (age range 10 days to 10 weeks). It's very rare -- I bet we're the only people in our entire suburb to keep chickens.
We now have two 10 week old Ameraucanas that I bought from a woman in a neighboring suburb, six 6 week old Barred Rocks that I bought from a woman out in the country, and six 10 day old Rhode Island Reds that I got at TSC (my son pleaded with me). The RIR are inside in a brooder (a cardboard box with a light), but I let them out this afternoon for the first time (it was over 80).
The Ameraucanas and Barred Rocks are all pullets and I think 4 of the 6 RIR are as well, but I'm not sure. We'll know as they grow, I suppose.
Anyway, thanks for the help you've already provided and I look forward to getting to know you.
Sarah
