Hi everyone.
I'm in the preliminary stages of starting my flock. Designing my coop and run right now to be built this fall. I live on a ranch so there is room a plenty but also means predators a plenty. Looking at starting off with about 12 pullets, and get some roosters once I'm more seasoned with chickens. Looking at getting dual purpose breeds, seems like my best bet with our very hot summers and milder winters would be Australorps and Rhode Island Reds. If things go well, I'd like to have a flock of around 40, where 12 to 15 are egg layers, the rest will be for harvesting, hopefully have 2 harvests a year if that's at all possible?
I'm a brewmaster by trade, so I'll be using spent grain as feed for the flock, try and cut down the cost of feed by a fair amount.
Other than that, I am a prolific meat smoker, hunter, fisherman, looking at getting started on homesteading with other livestock. Just trying to convince my in-laws, the ranchers, to start having some wagyu cattle for personal consumption haha.
Looking forward to sharing my future flock with everyone here.
