(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I had chickens when I was a teenager on my parents' farm, but that was almost 20 years ago. I am trying to turn my half-acre of land into a mini agricultural Eden in South Carolina while I attend seminary. So my children value farming and know where food comes from. Very interested in regenerative ag.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Planning about 15-20, want to work up to more with a ratio of 1:3 (layers to pullets).
(3) What breeds do you have?
Planning to start with Rhode Island Reds. Unsure of others.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Chickens are beautiful animals that are beautiful, fun, beneficial, and tasty.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Raised bed gardening, homesteading, reading, shooting, and backpacking. I also love preaching and teaching the Bible.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My wife and I got married in 2016. We have three recently adopted sons (twins turned 10, and their 4-year-old brother). I am a Presbyterian Seminary student.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Duckduckgo.com; About 30 minutes; seeing pictures of parents working with their children to raise chickens (being a newer dad myself).
