Hello BYC members and staff, I'm excited to join the flock! I just recently moved to the Cowichan Valley, a rural community on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. My partner and I picked ourselves out of our urban life working in the arts and entertainment industry and moved here to follow our passion for growing food, keeping bees, permaculture, and you guessed it small farm animals. We would eventually like to be raising pigs, goats, sheep, ducks and of course Chickens!
We were drawn to the valley by my partners Aunt and Uncle who run a cidery and organic orchard. They were looking for some administrative help and asked my partner if she would like to work for them for a time. She readily agreed, and we began to look for a place to live. We were very fortunate to find an ad— tacked on the bulletin board of the general store—for a shared farmhouse situation.
So now we are living the life we have spent a number of years dreaming about. My partner can bike to work along country lanes and walk in the orchard on her lunch break, and I can begin to try to make a living in Organic Agriculture/Permaculture.
I have spent the last number of years studying about permaculture and natural agricultural practices, but have no real farming experience. My partner has similarly been studying beekeeping, but has yet to have her own hives. That is all about to change!
Well enough about us, what you really want to know about is chickens! Our housemates currently have a small flock of four layers. We are unsure of the breeds, but as far as we can tell three of them are Red Stars/Isa Browns and the fourth is a Blue Maran? But I am very new so...they could all be something entirely different.
I think that the coop could easily house more birds so I will be adding to the flock sometime in the near future. I am excited to get to work raising chicks. I will be doing research into breeds in the next week. I am open to suggestions...
I am also interested in pasture raised broilers, both as an income stream and as backyard protein. I would like to see more small scale and backyard protein production in our culture. I envision backyard Salatin style chicken tractors and aquaponic systems throughout suburbia.
Anyhow, I am excited to learn and share here in the BYC flock.
The Lone Gunmen, yes they are named after X Files characters. I just call them The Triplets as they tend to travel the yard together.

And this is Hazel, she's a bit of a loner.
