Hi there! I found this place recently, while researching laying hens. I noticed that all my Googled questions brought me to this site, so I figured this was the place to be.
While I had chickens growing up, I don't remember much. Other than collecting eggs, I didn't have much responsibility. It's been fun learning about what they need vs. what I want from them.
Husband and I just bought a small parcel (3 acres) of land we call Victory Gardens, and I was very excited to bring home my first flock.
We've got 12 chickens at the moment:
5 Australorp x Sussex (22 weeks - no eggs yet)
3 Euskal Oiloa (12 weeks)
3 Easter Eggers (12 weeks)
1 Blue Ameraucana (11 weeks)
I'm really getting into the whole "Homesteading" thing. The home we bought was a blank slate, and I've enjoyed putting in gardens and the chicken coop. I'd like to have goats and bees eventually, also.
I'm a SaHM with an almost 5 year old son and twin 2 year old girls. My husband works from home as a computer programmer, and my mom recently sold her home to come live on our 'farm' with us. Six people in a small bungalow is pretty tight, but we're enjoying it so far.
As for other hobbies, I'm a knitter. I do custom knitting, have my stuff in a few art galleries, dye yarn and design patterns.
Good times.
