Hey folks! I'm a new chicken mom of about five days. I joined your site looking for ideas for a chicken coup since my hubby was banging mysteriously away out on the back side of the property and needed some ideas on 'What do chickens need anyhow?' Great site. Great forums too!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Well, five days ago I picked up 6 teenage (4 week old) RIR's... and fell in love with them. I just recently took them for a walk outside and for play time. I think they are all going to be pets. We got them for the eggs. Then when I did more research, I discovered I wanted some americanas too, and now I have 4 pale chicks (I think they are going to be white?) in a separate brooder hanging out growing big and strong.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

That makes 10. I've been reading the Cackle Surprise thread though and am sooo tempted to order more. I'm not sure if its too late in the year or not. I also heard our local feed store has wynedottes and gold and black sex links. I was thinking of sneaking a chick or two in with my americanas (hubby wont' notice right?) to round it out to a nice twelve or fourteenish number.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Rhode Island Reds, Americanas, and contemplating more... my best internet bud is in love with geese so now I want a goose for some silly reason after seeing all her pictures of this enormous lovable cuddly gossling that eventually grew bigger than herself.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

I was googling for chicken support! You guys have chicken support plus. Thank goodness I found this site and all the wonderful people here.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I have a horse addiction. We've got four right now... one black arab, one friesan sporthorse, one saddlebred and a belgian mare I ride and drive. I also garden, do art, and am addicted to storytelling online. We also have a mini donkey thats a pure joy.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have a wonderful devoted hubby (who has his flaws but is overall taking this business of chickens very well - the chicks are living in his office atm). We don't have any kids, but we do have 2 dogs, four horses, a mini donkey, and numerous cats.

It sounds like you've already been bitten by the chicken bug. I wish I could get more chickie babies myself, but those darn municipal codes! The BYC forum is full of useful information, and some pretty fantastic, friendly, knowledgeable people. I'm sure you'll fit right in!
