1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I still feel very new still, but I got my first chickens last June when my daughter’s Kindergarten class hatched some chicks. I ordered more hens from MPC, since chickens are addicting and fun, and have lost quite a few to predators while I figured chicken rearing out. My first incubated OE eggs will be ready in a week, and I’ll have more chicks arriving by mail next month.
Fortunately, I have an old “barn” and I’m in the process of converting the second cinder block “stall” into a larger coop/interior housing.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
5 hens, 1 rooster, and 5 pullets.
(3) What breeds do you have?
6: Olive Egger rooster, Buff Orphington, Cuckoo Marans, Blue Marans, Partridge Penedesenca and
a (can’t recall, but black with orange).
5 Pullets: 3 Americauna, 1 Egyptian Fayoumi and 1 Barnvelder
Incubated eggs are F2 Olive Eggers.
I’ve ordered EE, “top hats”, Polish, a few silkies, lavender americauna, and a Black Cooper Marans. I want multi-colored eggs and I love having a variety of chicken breeds.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Delicious eggs, learning about so many things (genetics, chicken breeds, wound care, basic carpentry, predators, etc), their cute little personalities and the joy of animal ownership for myself and kids.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Swimming, hiking, scouts, cross-fit, and slowly updating my house and land (city-girl-turned-country last year).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I foster dogs and cats (currently one dog and cat), plus own 2 geckos right now. My two kids are in elementary school.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Joined last year after reading so much about chickens before I got my first chicks and now while owning them and becoming a chicken freak.
