(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've been a Chicken Mama since 3/13/09 now, so I'm still pretty new.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have four laying hens.

(3) What breeds do you have?
I have a buff Orpington, a partridge Plymouth Rock, an Australorp, and a silver-laced Wyandotte.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I did a ton of internet research before deciding to get chickens and BYC was the most informative site I came across.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Reading, cooking, gardening, home repair, and your basic urban homesteading.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a second generation city girl. My Grandmother was a traditional Iowan farmer's wife, who took care of field and stock, during the Great Depression. We lost her several years ago, so at times I miss her terribly. Raising chickens for eggs, like she used to, is a small way of staying close to her. My friends and coworkers tease me for 'going country' (the same people who want my eggs - mind you) but I draw the line at getting pigs and cows. Well, maybe a little potbelly pig...but that's it!

As for everything else, I'm a social services receptionist with two dogs and two cats. I share a house with my sister and her nine other four-legged free-loaders.

Welcome, AstuteBunny! I think of my Grandma often, too. I think she would be thrilled that I am raising chickens. She had a lot of experience with raising them... dispatching them too!
