Hello from Indiana! I see lots of newbies here - so am I! I am starting from the very, very beginning. I'm a total city girl so this is a little crazy for me!

I do live on 1.3 acres and I have a shed that can we can fix to become our coop. It's just me and my husband - how many chickens would we need?

Are chickens social animals? How do they survive the winter outside? Finally, there are 4-5 books on Amazon on how to get started - do any of you recommend one particular book? THANK YOU all so much!!!!

Welcome to BYC. Chickens are social creatures and 4 chickens would be about right for you and your husband. I recommend you purchase chicks from a hatchery such as Meyer, MyPetChicken, Ideal or Cackle...there are alot of hatcheries. Meyer Hatchery is out of Ohio and you can order as little as 3 chicks from them. In the meantime, you can go to the "Where am I, Where are You" section and look for others from Indiana that may live close to you and query them in regards how their chickens survive your winters. We dont have winters like yall way down here lol.

Not restricted to chickens, but a fantastic book for the DIY/dreamer

A couple months ago I picked up a copy of The Big Book of Self-Reliant Living. It is mainly a collection of public works brochures and pamplets from the past 50 years. It includes items such as how to build a log cabin, typical hand tools and their uses, energy efficient housing desgn, gardening, raising livestock, even things like running a trout farm or building a permanent cabin tent. A lot of information is packed into this book.
