Hello, everyone!

Thank you for accepting me into the forum; I have already learned so much from many of the threads, having returned to this site repeatedly over the past three months. We live in a rental house, and are very fortunate to have a conscientious, fair, and supportive landlady. She gave us permission to start our flock, so I offered to share our eggs with her and her husband. Since then, I have been reading up on chicken breeds, care, coop and brooder ideas, and more.

We do not yet have chickens, but will welcome chicks in two weeks. Our friends raise both Plymouth Rock Hens and Copper Marans, and offered to give us a few chicks for free to start our backyard flock. They pulled eggs for us, and I believe they are Rock Hens. I wouldn't object to the Copper Marans, but I'm really looking forward to Rock Hens.

We live in a quiet neighborhood in a small town, and other neighbors have chickens, too, so we're in good company. I also love to garden, and we currently have fruit trees (mulberry, fig, persimmon), vegetables (tomatoes, tomatillo, peppers, okra, potatoes, turnips, chard, mustard greens, arugula, mini pumpkins), herbs (basil, oregano, thyme, fennel, lemongrass, sage, cilantro, parsley, dill), and various flowers, shade plants, and ornamental trees.

I homeschool our children, and due to various allergies, we haven't been able to have pet dogs and cats, which has made them long for animals of our own. We can do chickens, though, especially since they're mostly outside. Our oldest wants to show chickens with the local 4-H club, so this is especially exciting for him. We also love to read, and one of their favorite new books is Caughey's A Kid's Guide to Keeping Chickens. We're getting How to Speak Chicken next, as well as Damerow's Chicken Encyclopedia. My husband wants ducks, too, so after we adjust to life with chickens, we'll look into duck husbandry.

Thanks again, and looking forward to learning more as we get closer to Chick Day!

Welcome to BYC! Chickens are a great learning experience for all ages. I have a mixed flock of chickens and ducks. The people on BYC love their birds and I'm sure you will too!

My flock says hi! (p.s I'm sorry for the chicken spam)

I'll always suggest Muscovies for people interested in getting ducks. Their large body size matches their large personality! Nothing cuter than a 'Scovy tail wag.
