Just dropping in to say hello and introduce myself. I am from northern Indiana and just got our chicks last week from Meyer Hatchery. Our 26 Rainbow Rangers arrived Thursday with no problems. Our 10 layers (Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Golden Buffs and Australorps-2 of each) arrived Friday morning with 2 DOA and one that was very weak and struggling all day until we realized there was nothing we could do for the poor girl and put her out of her misery.
We lost both Australorps and either an Orpington or Golden Buff, I can't tell. I'm so bummed as I was really looking forward to having at least one Australorp! I think they are beautiful. Not sure if I will get replacement chicks or my money back. I have to call the hatchery tomorrow.
Anyway, this is our first foray into keeping chickens. We were originally only going to do layers first and see how that went before getting meat chickens, but I watched Food, Inc again and was reminded how horrifying commercial chicken operations are! Plus my sister has chickens and she convinced us to do both. So after almost a year of research and patiently waiting for my husband to get the shed we are converting to a coop up and around, we now have 33 sweet peepers in our care. They are so fun to sit and watch! I could watch them for hours run around flapping their tiny wings and slowly fall asleep in their food! They're so cute!
Well I have some newbie questions but I will ask them in the appropriate forum. Just wanted to introduce myself!
