Came across this site this past winter when I was really starting to read up a lot more on chickens.
I'm fairly new to chicken raising, built my first coop, and outside run this year.
A friend dropped me off two americana chicks that one of his hens hatched out, but much to my horror, my heat lamp bulb died the very first night I used it, and work up the next AM to only having one chick left. So I went through another contact and bought 10 more white rock chicks, which are a few weeks older then the Americana chick but they excepted the lone chick in my brooder box anyways. So I am at 11 un-sexed chicks right now (really anxious to find out how many will be hens). I'll attach a coop picture. I've added more ventilation for the coop and an outside ramp and platform for the chicks to play on since I took the picture.
I work a full time job by day (40+) hours a week, and am a gardener/tinkerer after work on my piece of land. I enjoy creating things, and watching them grow and being able to harvest something I've grown and tended to through the whole cycle.
I bought a house on an acre and a half of land with my wife several years ago (and that was a lot more difficult and stressful then I thought home buying could be) and have enjoyed having a little place to call home, besides chickens I have a few sheep, aquariums, 2 cats and a dog.
My wife and I were blessed to welcome a daughter into our lives 16 months ago. Due to severe pre-eclampsia, The doctors ehlped her arrive early, she was 8 and a half weeks early and only weighed 2 pounds 7 ounces. She spent the first two months of her life in an NICU in a hospital 70 miles away and my wife stayed down there with her. When we were finally able to bring her home she eventually was diagnosed with hershprungs, which required surgery to remove part of her colon that never formed. She is home, healthy and growing and learning more every day, its a wonder to watch her grow.

Sounds like your life has been very full lately. if you think buying a house is rough, try building one - ugh. Glad that your daughter is doing well. Nice coop!
