grit and rocks

Is letting your chickens graze and eat dirt and rocks and grass the equivalent of feeding them grit? or is buying grit a must for chickens? i know that it helps them digest the food.

If enough small stones are available free range chickens generally find their own grit.

Your geography, geology is the answer. For me the answer is YES. I'm on "the Sandy River," I have more sand than anything else, abundance of Grit !!
