How many of you feed your chickens grit even though they live outside? My chickens our in the yard eating off the sandy ground, I have no grit available as I thought once they are out you don't have to worry about it, is that correct?

Our place is full of sand and small rocks. We still provide grit. The flock eats it, as we have been through 2 50-pound bags in 3 years. They usually eat more in winter, as we get snow-bound.

Grit is inexpensive, an impacted crop is not pretty and could be fatal. I just think it is easier to provide the grit.

I also provide grit, even though the chickens have access to ground with sand and small rocks. I figure the more choices they have, the less likely we'll have a problem with an impacted crop.
