I was just reading a thread on grit vs. oyster shells, and I know that I should wait for oyster shells/calcium until they are at a laying age. I also read that any "all purpose" sand from a building supplier is fine to use as grit.

But my question is: When do the chicks need the grit? Is it only when scrap food/snacks are introduced or even with their chick starter?

And if it is only when snacks are introduced, when is it okay to introduce snacks? I'd ask what snacks you feed chicks, but I'm sure I saw a post on that somewhere....I'll dig it up.

Thanks so much. I try to look for posts that already have these questions, but there are so many to sort through. Hope this isn't a redundant question.

PS My chicks ship today! Yippee!

And if you ask there are 10 more people interested in the answer.

You are correct- grit when you introduce treats. Treats, some wait for a few weeks, others after a few days. I gave treats the first day with no problem. The treats can be the same items you would give any chicken. I just chopped them up very small.
