If I have been feeding my chicks whole organic flaxseed (from Mcmurry), do I need to offer them grit. If so do I mix it into their feed or offer as a side.

I would say yes they need the grit to properly digest those seeds. Grit can be sprinkled on their feed but I like to offer it in a separate container.

Well Mas, the big feed companies spend small fortunes on developing their feed formulas. It`s extremely hard to improve on commercial feeds. I`m not familiar with the nutrients in flax exclusively, but I`d be willing to bet your chicks would be better off with a commercial chick starter/grower with the flax for treats. Having said that, it`s a highly recommended practice to get grit in them early and get those little gizzards working. Seems to make a stronger and healthier bird. Course sand or parakeet grit is fine for chicks to start on. Oh, and I like your avitar.
