I read (I believe it was in Storey's) that chick scratch can help pasting and that if the local feed store doesn't carry it then you can put adult scratch in a blender or processor. My chicks don't have pasting but I thought it would be good to encourage them to turn over their bedding and to give to them as a treat. Anyone else do this? Do they need grit to digest scratch? I've not noticed any problems so far but I've been afraid to give them too much.

I would beware of giving them too much. Young chicks really need the complete nutrition of their starter feed to get off to a good start. Yes, they would need grit to digest it.

A little chick scratch is OK, but as the other poster said don't give them a lot.

I use rolled oats as chick scratch myself. Accomplishes the same thing and I don't have to feed grit.
