What do you guys use to combat the mud in your runs? I've been considering pea gravel or playground wood chips, but I'm having trouble deciding between the two. Ideally we'd like something that has easy maintenance, doesn't stink, and lasts a few seasons at least. Anything we use has to be laid down 4 inches deep, unfortunately no more.

Go with the pea gravel. It drains fast while the wood chips do not. As a retired teacher I know playground wood chips can stay wet for a considerable time.
