I have two 7 month old hens (Rhode Island Red & Wyandotte). We picked them up about 2 weeks ago. They are healthy and active, but have not started laying yet.

Also, they sleep on the ground in their covered run. Is this 'normal'? We have a roost but probably need to raise it and increase the spacing. Any thoughts on why they are choosing to sleep on ground?

It is possible they dont know where the roost is, or maybe didnt have access to one prior to you getting them. When the evening sets in....and they look like they are settling in for the night....gently pick them up, and place them on the roost. This might take several times....but eventually they will get the idea.
