I'm about 2-3 weeks away from processing a bunch of Freedom Ranger broilers. I went to the feed store yesterday and picked up two bags of 16.5% protien Broiler Finisher (was feeding 20% Grower). Only after I got home and checked the receipt did I note that the Finisher was $4/bag more than the Grower. That seems odd to me. Does it seem odd to you?

Incidentally, I also picked up a bag of layer feed for my hens that was higher in protien than their usual feed because they seem to be going into some sort of wierd springtime non-laying phaze, The higher protien feed was more expensive than the regular feed...which would make some sense.

So, does it make sense to feed the Finisher for the next 3 weeks if it is more expensive than the grower?

That is odd. Finisher is usually a little less expensive.

We are raising red rangers which I believe is basically the same breed. They are 11weeks old today and have been eating 20% their whole lives. Some of the Roos are just starting to look a little too big (lumbering walk). So 20% has worked pretty well for us. Note that we let them free range about 8 hours a day. I think that probably slows their growth down a little.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going back to the feed store on Monday, and if they insist on charging me more for the broiler finisher, I'll probably just keep them on the 20% grower.

Anyone else with experience or insight?

No but I appreciate the information. Getting my 20 broilers on June 14

Dropped by the feed store today and feel a bit foolish. It turns out that the grower feed I'd been purchasing came in 40 lb bags, while the broiler finisher comes in 50 lb bags, which explains the difference in cost. Duh!
