Hello! With a growing flock of chickens we come to this site often for advice and answers and can't believe we haven't actually joined until today. We started our flock last July with 4 White Polish and 3 Buff Orpington chicks from a hatchery. We lost one of the Polish in a few days (never looked right and that probably why they sent us extra). We acquired some young barred rock a few months ago who should be laying any day now. One of our Polish turned out to be a Roo who was not fond of our smal children so he went to live on a new farm. We had hoped to hen hatch our own babies but none of our hens had gone broody...until the rooster left. One of our Polish was NOT leaving that box, so we ordered some black australorp eggs for her and she successfully hatched 5 of the 6 yesterday! We are new to chicks in the coop and just hoping that the older girls aren't jerks and let them alone.

So here we are with our ever growing flock a ways north of Detroit. 2 White Polish hens, 3 Buff Orpington hens, 4 Barred Rock hens, and 5 newly hatched black australorp babies! Hoping for no more than 1 Roo in the batch. Can they be sexed? Or do we just wait and see?
