Growth on beak, is it Papillomatosis, pox or something else?

Hey all,

On of my Brahma chicks has a small growth like thing on its beak. It looks sort of like a wart and in the week that we've have them it looks like it's gotten slightly bigger. My main question is, is it just a wart or should I get the betadine ready in case it's dry pox?

It's the only chicken with the growth, the other 9 chicks seem fine, poops are normal and they are on Riverina chick starter. At the moment they are in a large plastic tub with sawdust bedding. Feeder always full and water changed twice daily mainly cause they keep kicking sawdust into it.

They will have a chicken tractor soon but I want to paint it first before I put the wire on but all this lovely Aussie rain has put a few dints in that plan.

Hard to know if that is fowl pox or not, but Betadine would not hurt. Are mosquitoes, which transmit the pox virus, a problem right now where you live? That could also be an injury or peck. Usually there would be more pox lesions on the chick or on others. Fowl pox virus lasts about a month, and no treatment is required. It can be more severe in chicks than adults.

Mosquitoes aren't really a problem at the moment in aus cause it's winter. If they can survive fowl pox thats a good thing, I can just try and treat them as best as possible. The growth has gotten bigger though.

It is not fowl pox if mosquitoes are not out now. It could possibly be a hemangioma or strawberry mark, a lesion on skin which has blood vessels, and very common in children. In chickens those can be benign, but sometimes it can be malignant, as in hemangiosarcoma, seen in avian leukosis virus. I would just keep an eye on it to see if it continues to grow. If this is a special prized chicken to you, you could see a vet about taking it off. But something like this could even be an injury.
