I noticed one of my chickens limping this evening. I picked her up to check out her feet. I noticed what looked like a clump of dirt stuck to the bottom of one of her feet. Then I checked her other foot; it has a dirt colored circlle in the middle of the bottom of her foot; the pad of the foot appears swollen. I tried soaking her feet in water, but it did not help. My daughter thinks they look like warts.

The chicken is a little over a year old easter egger. She is laying consistently and eats Flock Raiser as well as treats and free ranging in the evenings.

She is limping quite extremely. What can I do for her? Any ideas of what it could be?

Thanks for your help.

This is Bumblefoot and she needs to be treated for it. Soak her foot in epsom salt and water every night for 20 minutes. If the bumblefoot isnt too bad you can just give her some PenVK IM for 5 days and she should be over it. If the bumblefoot is a bad case you may have to remove the core or try a method in one of the links below.

Wow! You guys are quick. I have been looking at pictures of bumlbe foot and I think you guys are probably right. But in most of the pictures I am seeing the sore area is the same color as their skin; on my EE the spot is dark brown dirt colored. But I will definitly start soaking her feet in epson salts; her feet are not nearly as swollen as the pictures I am seeing. Hopefully we have caught it quickly.

Thanks for the advice.
