growths and scales on legs

How does one prevent older hens from the 'scales' on the legs separating, and the old, gnarled/growth stuff from happening?
What causes this in the first place?

I agree with IMP. If you have vaseline on hand rub it into the legs to smother the mites. The scales will fall off, or you can pick them off gently in a few days.

I thought all old chickens' legs looked like that until coming on BYC. Leg scale mites for sure! After using WD40 spray on the legs and feet nightly for 2 weeks, now my old chickens have beautiful smooth legs! Will continue to use it periodicly to keep their legs nice!
