I have a chicken that has scaly bumps on her feet, they are really thick and all over her feet and up part of her legs. I think she lays eggs with very thin shells. what can i do? Is there any cure"

Pictures please...I'm not sure what you mean by scaly bumps. Are they swollen areas? Are they on the bottoms of the feet as well as between the toes and up the legs? Is there a round scab in the middle of any of them (especially on the bottom)?

The scales on the legs and toes get raised and awful looking from the Scaly Leg mite. I put Petroleum Jelly on once a day, slather it on quite thick and all over the legs and toes. It will suffocate the mite and with in 5 - 7 days, the gross scales will fall off and the feet will be all nice and pink. Your chicken will feel much better too.

Oh yes, WELCOME SHARLA!!!

You're probably describing scaly leg mites which are easily cured, but as klmclain1 said, pictures would be very helpful. In the meantime, search "scaly leg mites" on this site and you will find pictures that others have posted, for you to compare to your chickens' legs. Her thin shells are most likely unrelated - make sure she is getting a good quality poultry layer food, and crushed oyster shell as well. Not too many treats so she eats mainly her layer pellet. We'll be watching for your pictures.
Edited to add this link to scaly leg mite pictures: http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/Health/Dis/scaly.html

Here is a picture of the growths on her feet. Thanks for the info.

Yep, she will appreciate my nursing her feet. I will do it tomorrow morning. I am so glad for the help, thought I might have to get rid of her

So, you all are so helpful I have another question. How do they get these mites? Is it because of the manure in the chicken house? I have a cousin that has chickens and she told me not to clean their chicken house out in the winter because the manure would keep them warm. Sooooo, now I think that's probably not a good idea and the cause of the mites. I feel really bad about this if its true. Think I will get out there and clean, clean, clean and then put vaseline on really thick. Poor girls, have a bad mama.
