I have a little run separate from but inside the main run with a little growing out coop with Hermione the warrior silkie and her 4 10 day old chicks and I have another little coop that is my 'maternity ward' where I have Doris the Slighty Dim Silkie and her 9 day 4 eggs. The move only happened a couple of days ago and hermoine must have got very confused and taken the chicks back into the maternity ward yesterday evening when Doris was off her nest so I found 4 chicks and her sat on the eggs! Doris the Slightly Dim Silkie was just stood there looking at them - she is a bit dim I don't think she knew what to do - she hasn't a cranky bone in her body so wsa just staring at them! I got them off and into the right coop and had a quick look at the eggs which seemed OK and put Doris back on. Today I noticed that she had pushed one of the eggs out the front of her and when I looked it had a hole in it - I'm presuming it happened yesterday - so annoying it was my only Black Copper Marans egg :he:he:he:he After opening it though I don't think anything was going on anyway - there was a blood spot on the yolk and another dried up looking blood thing in the white but I thought by day 3 there would be veins?

I would have opened the egg too. I always open the eggs that mom kicks out. If the egg was left in there she could have accidentally broke it and could have gotten yolk on the other eggs and ruined them.

Why would you open it ? What if its alive ? You should candle it or else you’re just throwing lives away just so you can see the inside. It’s uncool

The blood islands start forming along with the brain and digestive tract in the first 24 hours so there shouldn't have been veins yet.;)

Oh, sorry I misread what the OP said. I didn’t read the part where she mentioned the crack.
:thumbsup
Yep not even just a crack a full hole with bits of wood shavings in there - no chance of life there! I certainly wouldn't have been opening anything I wasn't sure was dead / no hope of continuation particularly my only BCM I was trying!

I would have opened the egg too. I always open the eggs that mom kicks out
may as well check out all the cool stuff happening in there
Absolutely - I'm totally new to all this and it seems to me the only way I can learn how it all works is to do this.

Ahhhh I wonder if what I could see was blood islands. I'll get a pic and upload it. I tried to find some day 3 pics online but could only find candle ones.

Oh no this is obviously a bigger problem than I thought :hit:hit:hitI found Hermione back in the little coop with Doris - but just on the clean shavings on the floor next to her - awwww :loveI thought and shooed her and the chicks into thier coop next door. I then thought I'd have a good look at the eggs and found another one pecked :hit:hitI initially thought that it must have happened in the last altercation but on opening the egg I saw what must be day 5 development as quite a bit on from the other :hit:hit:hitIt was one of my Faverolles (and the biggest most lovely looking one :hit). So cross with myself - I should never have opened the coop door - she just seems to ignore her all day and last night I shut it up before Hermione tried to take the chicks to bed so she went to her new coop no problems - today with the pouring rain she obviously decided to go to bed early (I was going down to shut up Doris for this reason). New plan is to leave Doris locked up and then go down and lock up H and the chicks then let Doris out each evening (it is when she seems to go anyway).

I have pics of both so I'll post them in the morning - need to get to bed. Night all :frow

So here is a pic of the first pecked egg that I opened (day 3). Does this look like it is fertile? there does seem to be a '?' shaped thing on the yolk and some blood in the white. Is this day 3 development? Or an infertile egg with some normal bits on it?

This is what I then found yesterday (day 5) - definitely a baby chick :hit
