I have looked up many youtube videos about broody hens and the noises they make. we have a hen (big mama) that lays but is not broody and makes those sounds all the time! she is the grumpiest thing i have ever seen!! she chases the other birds and has even chased OUR young ones! she is the biggest of the flock, if we get bigger one's will she calm down? she is a buff orpington and we got a buff roo so we could breed them, and all though he is not ready yet, i am scared with how mean she is it will not happen. when the roo gets bigger will he put her in her place or do you think she i will just always be a layer??

I have the same thing here... I just adopted 3 days ago a RIR, EE, BR and Miss Bertha Butt (buff Orp) she does not seem to be mean to people.. but she is being mean to the EE and sometimes the RIR.. She does not want the EE to do anything at times.. they are 1 yr old.. I am almost wondering if its the treats I've been giving them.. Bertha (buff orp) seems to want them all. These hens came from a flock of about 30 and were not given human attention except for feeding and collecting.. None of them are mean to us.. Not even a peck.

She doesn't want the treats that i give them, but she doesn't want them to have them either. we let them mingle in the morning and in the evening, if we can watch them. i just don't know what to do to calm her down....

Chickens are very territorial. Likely she will calm down a bit as they get used to each other(as in, she gets tired of chasing them). The rooster is another story. Roosters are dominant members of the flock, but only after they reach a certain level of maturity. Your rooster probably will get his butt kicked by that hen until he matures enough to get rally mad and kicks her butt. I watched it happen. As long as she can run a bluff on him, she will. You might look around and see if you can locate someone who has an older rooster of that breed that would be willing to trade for the younger one. It will take a very strong personality to deal with her........Pop
