I put my guineas out in thier temporary coop last night for the first time (they will be 100% freerange). I even went out after dark and put them all on a roost so they wouldn't sleep on the damp ground (which may have contributed to the problem) At some point my girlfriend let my dog out and she must have freaked the birds out (you know how guineas are). GF said she heard all kinds of flapping from in the cage. This morning one is dead. I assume from a broken neck. Is this common? Any way to avoid it short of putting up padding (which I'm not going to do).

Another question. They are about 4 weeks old but seem fairly well feathered and the nights here in SC have gotten pretty mild (around 70 degrees). I read posts advising waiting till they are TWO MONTHS! Is this correct? Could it have died from exposure at 70 degrees? I cannot put up with those stinking birds in my back room for another 4 weeks (all of this years birds came in at one week intervals so we have had bird in house for two months now and I'm at the end of my rope.

I would think if it was the cold that did it, they'd all or mostly be dead. It's possible that it got spooked and flew into the wall. Wouldn't be the first bird to die that way. Sorry to hear it did though. Good luck with the others!

It's really, really hard to break a guineas neck. They are like rubber, but thats what it sounds like happened. I think its fine to have them outside now. I can't imagine what caused this.

The only other thing that I can think of is if they piled on top of each other on the ground and one suffocated.

Just a suggestion. Check it's neck to be sure. If it's really wobbly then it must have been just a freak accident.

Guinea's are tough little critters.

If they're anything like chickens, they could have had a heart attack from being spooked too. If the neck was broken you'd probably be able to find the break. If it sustained brain injury, might be harder to tell. If they were out for the first time in the coop and were used to a 'night light' they could have gotten scared and piled up with the one on the bottom suffocating.

the best thing to do is keep the dogs away i noticed with these kinds of birds they're really observed and spooked easily so until they're used to the dogs don't keep it out at night especially since the little birdies can't really see
