Guinea Coop.

Ok so I am planning to get 10 guineas sometime in April. I was wondering how big of a coop I needed if I was gonna free range them every day. I just need a coop for them to sleep in.

Always make it bigger than you think it needs to be. They need at least 4 sq. ft. of clear space per bird. The more free area the better.

Agree that the bigger the better. It took me awhile to understand this recommendation, but I think it’s because guineas are quarrelsome birds. There is always a low ranked bird subject to bullying, plus birds that are temporarily on the “kicked to the curb” list. If there’s insufficient room then the low ranking birds won’t go in for fear of being attacked. If they have to stay in during the day for poor weather, then the low ranked birds can again get attacked.

I do put up a lot of “junk” for visual barriers. I’ve made several wooden triangular tunnels that are guinea height and are placed strategically to block line of sight to the door and feeders. That allows birds to be at separate feeders and for birds using the pop door to be visually separated from the bullies to decrease door guarding. The tunnels are also used for nesting and for low ranked birds to escape bullies.

so do guineas need a lot of space I have 12 guinea eggs I bought from someone and I'm going to hatch them I also have 4 chicken hens and 2 roosters which I need to get rid of. but I also have 18 chicks that I am raising for more eggs and to sell more eggs. My coop was big enough for when I have 18 last year and it was just fine. i have a area just for roosting that is about 5 feet off the ground. on the side where the laying boxes are I have some chickens who get up and roost in the rafters which I am fine with because a lot can fit up there. is that big enough for about 6 guineas? If I did have to add onto the chicken coop how large would it need to be for 6 or less guineas.

Guineas need more "personal" space than do chickens. The minimum of clear floor area is 4 sq. ft. per adult guinea plus a lot more run space.

This is my guinea coop I built out of pallets. It is 8x4 and has housed 9 guineas successfully. Right now it houses 4 (predation losses) but I have 5 keets in the brooder destined for this coop. They free range all day and come back to the coop at night. For a few weeks in winter they were contained to the coop 24/7 without incident. I have about 20 linear feet of roost space for them in there, which they seem to like. They also seem to dislike going into darkness, so I opted for alternating clear PVC roof panels which keeps their coop light a bit later.
