Guinea goes broody - New Pics Added

I just found that one of my girls is sitting on a next of about 50 eggs. I have no idea how long she has been sitting, or how I she can incubate so many eggs. I just figure one day I will come home and be over run with keets. Then I will have to catch and sell them.. lol...

When I lived in SC we had some abandoned guineas take up residence in our suburban neighborhood. Drove the neighbors crazy except for me.

Anyway one guinea hatched out about 15 keets under my shrubbery. When the time came for them to move to a different location, the whole adult flock helped with the move. Mama guinea would lead the keets for about 10 feet and one of the other adults would sound an alarm. Another adult would scurry over to the keets and help cover them for a few minutes then would lead them another little way. 10 more feet and the whole scenario was repeated. Eventually they all made it over into the wooded area, with the adults doing relays to help Mama guinea get all the keets safely transported across the yard.

We also discovered the hard way that possums LOVE a treat of guinea eggs, particularly around 3 a.m. The broody guinea would just stand there and screech while I got to get out of bed and chase the possum away.

Took some pics today of the broody guinea. First pic is of the eggs, second of broody guinea and her boyfriend protecting her. The eggs are from a second broody hen that was not sitting at the time. I'm afraid I will be over run with guineas.

I have a guinea mom who's been "flirting" with the idea of going broody. She sits in the box with the chickens but bounds away when the pen door is opened. I may start leaving eggs after I've set my last cochin on eggs. It would be great if she got serious.

Also, when my first guinea mom successfully hatched out a nest in the brush, I lured her back to the pens by picking up a couple keets. She was really mad but she and the rest followed me and the screaming keets back to safety.

you got lucky with her going in the coop congrats on that last year i had one do the same for me hatched 6 babies though raised 2 to adult hood so not near as many as you but ill definitely be keeping an eye on this thread

Well she is still sitting, but today she was getting some help. Another female is now on the eggs with her in the coop. Two of them sitting on the same clutch of eggs. When I locked them up tonight the "helper" guinea was still huddled up next to the original broody female helping her keeping the eggs warm. The weather report said it was going down to 40F tonight. Maybe the guineas heard the weather report and decided to help her out.
