We’ve just added 3 guinea hog gilts to our menagerie. Yikes! This is a completely new adventure for us, but we’re excited. I’ve got a lot to learn about pig-keeping so if anyone has tips or could point me toward additional resources, I’m all ears.
Pig panels are your friend.
I have something I call The 10th Pig Rule; Nine out of ten pigs are easy-going creatures, who want a full belly, some company, a place with sun, a place with shade and a.comfy bed. Give them that and they are perfectly content.
The 10th pig will destroy fences and pens just because, are carnivorous bullies and when they escape, will go right for the smoothest lawn of your least tolerant neighbor, even if they have to travel a mile to do it. And they'll drag all the other pigs into their bad habits.
When you find yourself with a 10th pig, send it to Camp Kenmore right then. Don't wait. Don't fatten it, for the love of all things, don't breed it, don't hesitate, just ship it right then, even if all you'll get is roast piglet or even just dog food. Don't think about what you spent on it, how you wanted to breed it - just ship it off.
Then all your pig-keeping will be easy and stress free, because 9 out of 10 pigs are a pleasure to keep.
Thanks! That is great advice and made me laugh too. I hope we don't have a 10th pig! We've fenced off about 1/2 acre with woven wire and two strands of electric.... so far, they haven't been testing the boundaries, but it's only been a week, so all my fingers and toes are still crossed.
