daughter just saw movement in her piggies belly and she is FAT.. thought we had two females.. ha.. since it turns out to be male female does the male need to be removed ? will he harm the babies when she has them?. we have been watching videos and it seems all females together when birthing.

Females can get pregnant as young as 5weeks and males can breed as young as 3weeks so if you've had this guinea pig less than about 70days you could have bought it pregnant from the store. Guinea pigs are pretty easy to tell the gender of. Just go look up some pics online and run your finger across the pelvic bone just above the genitals. On males you will feel the squishy bit of their retracted penis rolling over the bone under your finger. On females it's just smooth.

Males should be removed just prior to giving birth and for at least a few weeks afterward or they will immediately impregnate the female. Back to back pregnancies are very hard on guinea pigs. It's a good idea to leave them apart until the pups are gone. At 3-4weeks wean the male pups to make sure they don't get their mom pregnant and put them with the male. Leave the female pups with the sow. Then both parents have company and the pups have an adult to learn from until you sell them at around 8weeks. Then if you want to breed again the female will have had a 2 month break. If not keep 1 female and male pup since guinea pigs should always have company or neuter the male. Neutering guinea pigs isn't that uncommon. We had 3 neutered males while I was doing guinea pig rescue and we neutered one back when I was breeding because we didn't want a chance of anymore pups from his line.

So above is an picture of my female piggy around 11-12 weeks old
So here's a little info on what's going on....
I bought Grumpy from Petco Feb 2. Grumpy was suppose to be a male. When I got her, I immediately put her into my other males cage & they got along great..... too great. I had my friend come over and she confirmed Grumpy was a girl and she said she's pregnant.
I have no idea how far along. She doesn't look pregnant to me.
I'm so clueless. I've never had a female pig, let along a pregnant one. I have taken all precautions and got her alfalfa hay and everything she needs
My question is, does she look pregnant at all?
